The dental (c), lateral (x), and palatal (q) clicks of isiXhosa arrived through centuries of contact with Khoi and San communities.

Each click has a voiced, aspirated, and nasal version — nine sounds in total, all written with just three letters.

Start slow: practise the words 'cela' (please), 'xhosa', and 'qonda' (understand) in front of a mirror.
